As Fire Prevention Month concludes, the Albany County Sheriff's Office is distributing free smoke detectors today (Wednesday, October 29) in East Berne, New York. Sheriff Craig Apple announced that the giveaway will take place from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the East Berne Fire Station on Helderberg Trail. The initiative aims to enhance home safety by providing these life-saving devices to residents in need.
The Albany County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with local hilltown fire departments, is offering 500 smoke detectors on a first come, first served basis. The devices were purchased with a donation from an anonymous resident of the hilltowns, as reported by NEWS10 ABC.
Data indicates that nearly 60 percent of home fire deaths occur in residences without working smoke alarms. Sheriff Apple emphasized the importance of having functional smoke detectors in every home to prevent such tragedies. Residents are encouraged to arrive early to secure a device, as supplies are limited.
