Ceremonies are being held across New York today to honor the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The events mark the 24th anniversary of the attacks that killed nearly 3,000 people in New York City, Washington, DC, and Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The day is also recognized as a National Day of Service and Remembrance, encouraging Americans to volunteer in their communities.

In the Capital Region, several towns and cities are hosting memorials. Albany International Airport will hold a remembrance ceremony at 8:30 a.m. where officials will place a wreath at the airport’s 9/11 Memorial. In Amsterdam, a ceremony will take place at Riverlink Park at 9:30 a.m. According to NEWS10 ABC, other memorials are scheduled in Broadalbin, Saratoga Springs, and Troy, among others.

At the national level, ceremonies are being held at the National September 11 Memorial in New York City, the Pentagon, and in Shanksville, Pennsylvania. Vice President JD Vance will attend the ceremony at ground zero, where the names of the victims will be read aloud. NPR reports that President Donald Trump will attend the Pentagon service before heading to a baseball game in the Bronx.

The 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City will host a private ceremony for the 9/11 community and a public art installation, the Tribute in Light, will illuminate the night sky from dusk to dawn. The 9/11 Memorial website notes that the museum will close early today to accommodate these events.
