Infant, Two Other Children Die In House Fire After Being Left Alone

Three young children died after a fast-moving fire ripped through an apartment in St. Louis. Neighbors rushed to the third-floor apartment and kicked the door in, hoping to rescue the kids trapped inside. They were unable to get into the apartment due to the intensity of the flames, but firefighters managed to pull four-year-old Heaven Coleman and five-year-old Dream Coleman from the apartment.

They were rushed to the hospital but did not survive. Their six-month-old brother, Damarion Eiland, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police say the children were left alone and arrested their mother, who showed up once the fire had been put out. They wanted to charge her with first-degree involuntary manslaughter, two counts of endangering and one count of resisting arrest, but the circuit attorney refused to file the charges.

The attorney's office said they are waiting for the arson unit to finish their investigation and are awaiting the autopsy results to determine if the children died from smoke inhalation or other causes.

"We have asked the police to conduct additional interviews with witnesses and gather additional evidence. We are also awaiting the Medical Examiner's report," the St. Louis circuit attorney's office said in a statement.
