Today is World Autism Awareness Day and my youngest grandson has autism. Two years ago I never thought about autism or what it was. Now it is on my mind every day.
When my grandson was born he looked just any other baby, there was no sign that there was anything different about him. As he got closer to the age of two my wife and I became concerned because he wasn't talking yet and didn't seem to pay attention to us or look us in the eye. My daughter and her husband took him to the doctor and it was found he had a blockage in his ears. He had a procedure done to unblock them and then we all waited for him to talk to us, but it didn't come. My daughter took him to the doctor again and he was diagnosed with autism.
Since that time my daughter and her husband have done so much to make sure he has everything he needs to overcome autism.
He is such a smart little boy and and at the age of not quite 3 can read and spell better than most 5 year olds. I do have a connection with him now and it lights up my heart when I make him laugh or smile.
