Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers are back today with their first album in four years, Hypnotic Eye.

Petty had a specific goal in mind for the band's 13th studio effort. He tells us, "I was trying to prove to myself and a younger generation that you can have an album that won't start to get bad three songs in."

The words "hypnotic eye" do not appear anywhere on the album except for the title. Petty tells us, "The album is kind of a loose observational take on maybe American culture these days..."

Petty and The Heartbreakers start a tour in support of the album on Sunday in San Diego with Steve Winwood in the opening slot.
