According to The Hollywood Reporter, the iconic San Francisco band will be branding everything from guitar picks and greeting cards to high-end stuff such as books, apparel and shoes. They've signed with Epic Rights, a marketing organization whose principles have more than 30 years experience in licensing and marketing. The firm's other clients include KISS and the Woodstock Festival.
Longtime manager Bill Thompson -- who, shares ownership of the trademark with Grace Slick -- tells THR the Airplane "has lasted because it is good... better than most of the stuff being put out now." And with legal use marijuana on the rise, the timing for the band whose song "White Rabbit" famously ended with the line "feed your head" couldn't be better.
Thompson says he has reached out to former band members Paul Kantner, Jack Casady and Jorma Kaukonen -- and plans to share royalties from this marketing effort with them, though they are no longer involved in the partnership.
